Sox Notes: Jimmy Lambert, Dallas Keuchel, and another weird injury for Eloy Jiménez
On Tuesday night, Jimmy Lambert turned in a much-needed start for the White Sox; now it's Dallas Keuchel's turn to turn it around.
The White Sox topped the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night, their first regular-season victory in the Oakland Coliseum since 2017, and decreased their magic number to just 15.
Jimmy Lambert’s Notches Victory No. 1
The third time was the charm for White Sox rookie Jimmy Lambert who provided the Sox with five much-needed innings on Tuesday night, allowing just one run on three hits, as the 26-year-old rookie notched his first major league win.
While the first inning looked more akin to Lambert’s previous two starts this season (four runs on nine hits and two walks in just 6.2 innings), Lambert settled in after allowing a leadoff double to A’s infielder Josh Harrison, who would come around to score on a Matt Olson sacrifice fly to even the score up at one-a-piece in the first inning.
In innings two through five, Lambert allowed no runs on just two hits and left the ballgame with a 4-1 lead after the White Sox plated three in the home half of the fifth.
Lambert is now 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA in four appearances (three starts).
Dallas Keuchel Day
It’s Dallas Keuchel day again as the White Sox continue their three-game series with Oakland tonight, but lately, those words have brought more fear than fun to the hearts of White Sox fans.
Keuchel allowed five earned runs on seven hits in just three innings of work in a loss to the Kansas City Royals last Friday night and is 2-5 with a 6.57 ERA in his previous 10 starts for the White Sox.
Over that span, Keuchel has allowed 36 earned runs on 57 hits (11 home runs) while walking opposing hitters at a 3.47 BB/9 rate and allowing 2.01 HR/9.
Yeah, it’s not been good when Big D takes the ball for the White Sox, pre-dating the All-Star Break. The ground ball rate, Keuchel’s calling card, is where you like to see it at 54.7%, but it’s the results that take place when the ball isn’t on the ground that has killed Keuchel. His 22.9% HR/FB rate and the walks that make those home runs count for more have been the story we’d all like to forget.
Play of the Day
Jose Abreu’s motor is absolutely unmatched, man.
Injury Updates
Eloy Jiménez exited Tuesday night’s ballgame early after he was struck with an Andrew Vaughn liner in the knee while sitting, of all places, in the White Sox dugout at the Coliseum. Jiménez stayed in the game initially but came up grimacing after sliding into home plate on a Gavin Sheets single in the top of the fifth. Jiménez is listed as day-to-day with a knee bruise, and x-rays were negative on Tuesday night.
Adam Engel began a rehab assignment with the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday night. The White Sox outfielder was 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in a 2-1 loss to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
Carlos Rodón might pitch this weekend when the White Sox host the Boston Red Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. Rodón last pitched on September 1 when he tossed five innings of one-run ball against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rodón has not put together a start that lasted longer than five innings since he logged seven shutout innings against the Houston Astros on July 18.
